A ribbon cutting ceremony for Leesburg’s Turnpike Wastewater Treatment Facility Improvement and Expansion Project is scheduled for 10:00am on Thursday, May 5, on site at 1600 CR 470, Okahumpka. Construction is wrapping up and the components of the expansion are all online.
The $20 million undertaking increased the capacity of the treatment facility from 3 million gallons per day (MGD) to 4.5 MGD. In addition, various electrical improvements were also completed in order to increase the plant’s resiliency to power outages, extreme weather and natural disasters as well as improve the water quality of the effluent.
“We’re thrilled to see this phase of the plant expansion operational,” said City Manager Al Minner. “Ensuring our city’s infrastructure is keeping pace with development is vital to the success of our region’s growth and this project is an important piece of that.”
The project was designed by the joint team of Dewberry-Hydro and Carollo wastewater engineering and was built by Wharton-Smith, Inc. General Contractors. Funding assistance was provided by the St. Johns River Water Management District in the form of a $1.5 million water quality improvement grant.
