Lake Sumter State College recently issued the following announcement.
The dream season has come to an end for the Lake-Sumter State College volleyball team, but not before one final record-breaking match.
The Lakehawks started Friday with a match against No. 14 Richard Bland College. Heading into the NJCAA National Tournament, Head Coach, Amanda Phelps was tied with Steven Bishop for most win all-time at 66. A win against RBC would solidify Phelps as the programs all-time winningest coach.
Led by Madison Heskett's nine kills, LSSC won in three straights sets (25-17, 25-18, 25-23). Kayla Chambliss finished the game with 29 assists while Xiomara Williams and Mikayla Simmons both ended up with double-digit digs. The win not only elevated Phelps to the top of the mountain in career wins, but it also kept the team alive in the Tournament.
The night cap had No. 11 Lake-Sumter against No. 7 Scottsdale Community College. After two sets, the match was tied at one each. Scottsdale CC came out on fire in set three to the tune of a 25-12 victory. A tough battle ensued in the fourth set, but the Lakehawks came up just short, 25-23, bringing their season to an end.
Yes, it is the end of the road, but the 2021 team broke several records along the way. The team's 15 conference wins, regular season winning percentage and 25 total wins are all program records. Chambliss became the program's all-time assists leader with 1605 assists. Williams set the single-season record with 76 aces in 2021. As a whole, the team set new marks for assists (1449) and points (2034). The final record to fall was Coach Phelps 67th career win.
Congratulations on an amazing season to all of the players and coaching staff!
