The Florida League of Cities, the united voice for Florida’s municipal governments, announced that Groveland Vice-Mayor Mike Smith was recently appointed to serve on the Florida League of Cities 2021-2022 Land Use and Economic Development Committee, one of the League’s five Legislative Policy Committees.

Legislative Policy Committee chairs, vice chairs and members were appointed by the League’s incoming President, City of Lakeland Commissioner Phillip Walker.

As a Legislative Policy Committee member, Vice-Mayor Smith will help develop the League’s Legislative Action Agenda, which details priority issues that are most likely to affect daily municipal governance and local decision-making during the upcoming legislative session, as well as help League staff understand the real-world implications of proposed legislation. Committee members are also asked to serve as advocates for local decision-making throughout the legislative process.

Vice Mayor Smith noted, that “With the explosive growth that Groveland is experiencing, serving on this committee will not only ensure the needs of the state are met, but will also allow for the needs of local government to be a foundation for the League’s platform.”

Vice Mayor Smith serves with the Mayor and his fellow Council members, as the legislative branch for the City of Groveland. His responsibilities include setting policies and making decisions concerning various aspects of local government for Central Florida’s fastest growing city, which is also recognized as one of the safest cities and best places to live. He represents the City of Groveland on the Florida League of Cities, South Lake Regional Water Cooperative and the Affordable Housing Group. He serves as the City’s alternate member to the Lake-Sumter Metropolitan Planning Organization, South Lake Economic Development Committee, South Lake Task Force MPO, and the Veteran’s Affairs Committee.
