St. Johns River Water Management District recently issued the following announcement.
Construction will begin in early December
The St. Johns River Water Management District has closed the Stick Marsh air boat ramp due to nearby construction activities at Structure S-96. The boat ramp will be closed beginning today, Dec. 6, through mid-January. Alternative launching locations include the concrete boat ramp located at Stick Marsh or the air boat ramp at the 512 Rec Pad (also known as Blue Cypress Recreation Area).
Structure S-96 is a 58-ft wide concrete flood control structure located between the St. Johns Water Management Area (locally known as the Stick Marsh) and the C-54 Canal in southern Brevard County. The structure contains two 26-ft wide steel roller gates and serves as the emergency water outlet for Stick Marsh. It is one of the earliest components of the federal Upper St. Johns River Basin Project and was constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1971. On rare occasions, S-96 discharges surface water and stormwater from the upper basin into the Indian River Lagoon via C-54 Canal for flood protection purposes.
