Keep Lake Beautiful (KLB) is hosting a special event on Saturday, January 28, to help beautify the community and dispose of items that could act as a breeding ground for mosquitos. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in Groveland and Mascotte.
KLB invites volunteers and residents to participate in the following event activities:
Tires, bulk items, and household hazardous waste will only be accepted at Festival Park (117 N. Main Avenue, Groveland):
Bulk Item and Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off
Residents are encouraged to clean their homes and yards and dispose of excess trash, passenger car tires, and other items that could hold water and become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Lake County’s Household Hazardous Waste Mobile Unit will be onsite to accept hazardous household waste items, including paint, fuel, and more.
Waste Tire Amnesty Day
Lake County residents are invited to help combat mosquito populations and keep the community clean by participating in Waste Tire Amnesty Day. Residents with photo I.D. and proof of a Lake County address may dispose of up to 24 passenger car tires that measure 40 inches or less free of charge. Large commercial tires will not be accepted.
Community Clean Up (2 locations):
· Festival Park (117 N. Main Avenue, Groveland)
o Volunteers and walk-up registration are welcome
o Collection location for bulk items, tires, and householdhazardous waste
· Mascotte City Hall (100 E Myers Boulevard, Mascotte)
o Volunteer sign-in only
o No bulk items, tires, or Household hazardous waste collection at this location
Volunteers will work in groups to help pick up litter in the surrounding community. Volunteers can preregister online at www.keeplakebeautiful.com/#events to participate or register at the event. Volunteer check-in begins at 8:40 AM.
KLB will provide trash grabbers, safety vests, trash bags, gloves, and water to those helping to clean the community. Volunteers must be 16 years or older or be accompanied by an adult. Participants are encouraged to wear proper attire as well as sunscreen and insect repellent.
Sponsored by Keep Lake Beautiful, Lake County Solid Waste, and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, this event seeks to reduce the number of unsightly waste tires collecting water and creating ideal breeding grounds for disease-carrying mosquitos.
Since its launch, KLB has partnered with or hosted nearly 50 projects including community and waterway cleanups, roadside litter pickups, neighborhood and school beautification events, tree plantings and household hazardous waste collection events.KLB also encourages residents to use the county’s Litter Reporter website http://gis.lakecountyfl.gov/crowdsource/ to help pinpoint areas in need of a cleanup. The Litter Reporter is viewable on mobile devices and desktop computers, and lets users submit data about a particular area as well as attach corresponding photos. Keep Lake Beautiful will monitor submissions and propose cleanup efforts and community events as needed.
