City of Leesburg recently issued the following announcement.

The grand opening celebration for Leesburg’s new H.O. Dabney Aquatic Center is set for March 12th.  From 12 noon – 5pm everyone is welcome come out and experience the two-story water slide along with free hot dogs, free drinks and fun games.  Admission during this event is also free. The Aquatic Center is located at 312 Pine Street, Leesburg.

The aquatic center is open weekends only through May 22nd.  From May 28th through July 31st it will be open daily.  Hours of operation vary with the season and regular admission is $2.00 per person.

Built on 4.6 acres, the $5.5 million facility includes an eight-lane competition pool, zero entry multi-purpose pool, a two-story open flume slide, basketball hoops and a Vortex child’s play structure with small slide, water wall & geyser.  There are also picnic tables, shade structures, restrooms, and a concession stand.

The center is named for Hubert O. Dabney, a beloved member of the community who spent 47 years teaching and coaching youth in Lake and Sumter counties.  In 1954, at Dabney’s urging, the city built a swimming pool in Leesburg’s Carver Heights Community.  H.O. or “Coach” Dabney, as he was known, then devoted 35 years teaching many area residents how to swim in a pool that would later be dedicated in his honor.  Coach Dabney’s legacy continues through the naming of the city’s newest recreation amenity.

The complex was designed by CPH Engineering with their partner Water Technology, Inc. and was built by Evergreen Construction.
